“Get Waxed by the Dolly at the Parlour!
Had body waxing done at Guys and Dolls parlour in Brick Lane and was impressed by how quick and less painful it was, compared to treatments I’ve had in the past at other salons. This charming salon is conveniently located in our neighbourhood in Shoreditch and is close to The City.
The salon’s Director Shimol Kanuga is a beauty therapist herself and knows what she is doing. She uses Lycon Wax which is popular with celebrities. Australia’s Lycon Wax contains the finest resins, natural ingredients & aromatherapy oils to deliver superior performance, removing hairs as short as 1mm. With its low temperature it provides a comfortable treatment.
Every time I go for waxing, I hope and wish I don’t have to experience too much pain. Men have thicker hair than women so that is why we experience more pain, I think. At Guys and Dolls, I was assured not to worry and that I was going to be in very experienced hands.
Shimol is quite the Chatty Cathy! Me being the Chatty Charlie was ideal as our constant chatter distracted me from whatever little pain I was feeling as she ripped off the hair off my body. Women are so good at multi-tasking, I envy them! Before I knew it, the treatment was over. It wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be, and the “pull and press” technique meant the minor discomfort and pain I was feeling disappeared almost instantly.
The Lycon brand offers a choice of Hot Wax, Strip Wax and Lycon’s unique Lycojet waxes, complemented by pre and post waxing oils and retail home care products and accessories, allowing the right combination to be tailored for total customer satisfaction. Lycon hot wax is ideal for sensitive skin and delicate areas.
So why is Lycon wax ideal? The wax literally shrink wraps around the hair and does not stick to the skin. When the wax is removed it pulls from the very root of the hair follicle, removing the dermal-papilla. This will prevent hair breakage, in-grown hairs, bruises and redness and the painful sting associated with strip waxing, therefore leads to softer smoother skin for longer. This enables it to last longer and also allows the area to eventually loose hair growth.
Shimol also shared with me her hints and tips. She recommends not exfoliating if you have been waxing previously. This is due to the hairs being thinner and so exfoliating before waxing can actually cause ingrown hairs as they break.
However, if you shave off your body hair, then exfoliating before a waxing treatment is recommended. Once the waxing treatment is done, the therapist applies moisturising oil on your skin. As the days pass by, you would want to moisturise your skin yourself and keep it smooth and supple.
But Shimol advised me against using moisturising creams or lotions as many of them contain alcohol so they leave a sheen over the fine hairs and cause them to get trapped under the skin. She recommends an oil (preferably body oil) as this will enable the hairs to be left still on surface. I use Bio Oil. Coconut oil is good too, as is Cocoa Butter oil. But avoid heavily perfumed ones and get the organic ones instead. That is my preference.
I had a full body waxing treatment done (please note that Guys and Dolls do not offer intimate waxing – Boyzilians! – for men, so you can shave those areas instead). And my skin is super smooth. I have been following Shimol’s after care advice, and the hair regrowth seems finer and slower than what I experienced after previous waxing treatments in other salons.
Shimol had received training in Los Angeles. She mentioned that the coaching there is much more advanced than in Britain. The therapists there are pushed to be perfectionists, and made to ensure that every in grow hair is removed. It is extremely important to have a pattern of how you remove the hair, and Shimol has certainly mastered the art of waxing.
